Chairman's Report
SHALOM. I HOPE YOU ARE ALL KEEPING WELL

I hope you are all keeping well and managing to stay clear of the winter flu bug, which I can report from personal experience, is not very pleasant at all. Following on from the (man) flu I managed to pick up an ear infection which has left me deaf in one ear, hopefully my hearing should return!

We had a splendid turn out for our film afternoon (The Zoo Keeper's Wife) in January. Although the film was very moving and reduced most of us to tears, we all enjoyed it very much. Special thanks to Ian for acting as projectionist and sound man for the afternoon. Also, thanks to Aimi as our usherette with her wonderful snacks and drinks. We are planning another film afternoon within the next few months. We will be showing the film "66", which is about problems faced by a boy whose Barmitzvah coincides with the final of the 1966 World Cup. You can leave your tissues at home for this film, which is a little more cheerful.

Rabbi Ian Morris from Sinai Synagogue in Leeds has now retired from his role which he has undertaken for the last 30 years. I wish a long and pleasant retirement.

Attendance was good at the Guildhall in Hull to mark the Holocaust Memorial Day. Our very own Sarita had the honour of giving the Priestly blessing this year. Thank you Sarita

We are holding one of our famous Friday Night Open Services on Friday 23 February 2018 at 7.00pm. If you know anyone who would like to come along, please contact Audrey. Further details can be found on page 3. Ian and Aimi will be leading the service and giving a running commentary. We have decided to have fancy dress again at this year Purim Service and Kiddush on Wednesday 28 February 2018. The best dressed will receive a prize.

Tickets will be on sale soon for this year's Pesach service which will take place Friday 30 March 2018. More details and ticket prices can be found on page 4.

We now have the date for the Defibrillator and First Aid training, which is the afternoon of 22 April 2018. The event will start at 2.00pm and all are welcome. There will be light refreshments of bagels, tea etc.

School and group visits are still going well and special thanks to Deborah and team for organising these.

Many thanks indeed for all your kind birthday messages and cards for my half century. They were much appreciated!

Finally, please don't forget to come to our Friday Night services at 7.00pm and Shabbat Morning Services at 10.30am on the first Saturday of each month.
Forthcoming Events
OPEN FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICE

Following the huge success of the previous Open Friday Night Service, the next one will take place on Friday 23 February 2018 starting at 7.00pm. What makes this Service different from the normal Friday Night service is the running commentary from those leading the Service explaining the nature of the prayers being recited, their background, origin and the traditional rituals being observed.

After the Service, and following the Brachot over the wine and bread, there will be the Kiddush with a wide range of "Jewish-style" foods. There also will be opportunity to look around the Synagogue, talk to those members present and examine the Ark, Scrolls and other artefacts.

Please feel free to attend this interesting event which is open to all, but please contact Audrey on (01482) 563835 with numbers to enable sufficient catering.

School & Educational Visits
Ne've Shalom Synagogue is committed to educating the wider community about Judaism.

Each year over hundreds of pupils, students and adults come to learn some basic knowledge about Judaism. As part of the visit, they are shown Jewish artefacts and are taught about the traditions and rituals concerning our faith. We receive many compliments regarding the service that we offer and the schools and other institutions appear to enjoy the time spent this way.

Many groups return every year, so it is proving to be a popular event in the curriculum. We cater for all age groups from Primary to Secondary to Higher Education, adapting the programme to suit.

Although there is no charge, as all the guides are willing volunteers, we are always grateful for a donation of 30.00 to cover the costs of running the Synagogue.
